The Account

Five short chapters from a man who went home, and never came home alone again.

IChapter 1 of 5

The growl from the garage

After a long day at work, he heard low growls coming from inside his garage. Thinking it was something small — a raccoon, maybe a stray — he cracked the door open. He froze. A full-grown mountain lion was staring back at him.

IIChapter 2 of 5

Doors closed. Dogs safe.

He backed away slowly, heart pounding, and bolted the house. The dogs were inside, the door was shut. Panic gave way to the only thing he could afford right now: a plan. He had to get her out, and he had to do it without anyone getting hurt.

IIIChapter 3 of 5

A quiet release

Instead of calling it in, he managed to coax her out himself and drove her far from the property. He let her go where the brush thickens and the road forgets your name. That, he thought, was the end of it.

IVChapter 4 of 5

She came back.

It wasn't. Days later, she was back near the house. Then again. He started leaving food out — small offerings, the kind you'd leave for a barn cat that lost its way. The mountain lion kept returning.

VChapter 5 of 5

The unpaid guardian

Now, when he pulls into his driveway, sometimes he sees her up on the roof. Other times she's circling the house, slow and watchful. What started as the scariest moment of his life turned into the strangest security system he never asked for.

Then & now.
